Rangers are plotting a sensational summer swoop for Manchester Unites striker Alan Smith. SunSport can reveal that Ibrox gaffer Walter Smith has watched the 26-year-old twice in the last month.

Now he is praying that close friend Sir Alex Ferguson will sanction a sale at the end of the season.

Fans' favourite Smith has followed Gers throughout his career and I understand there have been positive noises from the player's camp about a move north.

But that will only happen if Smith is told he is surplus to requirements at Old Trafford next season.

Any plunge down the United rankings will fuel his desire to be the main man elsewhere.

Gers chief Smith saw the former Leeds United ace score his only goal of an injury-hit season in the 7-1 Champions League destruction of Roma.

That was followed up with another Gers visit to spy on him in United's 2-0 win over Sheffield United.

Now the England star is Gers' dream target to partner 25-goal ace Kris Boyd.

The move is in its infancy with United still chasing honours but Gers feel the player's package could be met and a fee thrashed out - if Fergie is willing to do business.

As Smith continues to rebuild his career after a horror leg break last year, he could be recalled England to replace banned team-mate Wayne Rooney in Estonia on June 6.

Rangers will hope they can firm up thier interest after that Euro 2008 qualifier. Source - Scottish Sun
